For the past week or so I’ve had my head down in the studio, working hard on a new collection and gathering my thoughts on the coming season. I always get reflective and analytical at the change of the seasons, usually taking stock of where I am in the business and how things look going forward.
Not too long ago I read A Place of Yes by Bethenny Frankel. I liked this book a lot because its very smart – and very funny. In addition to the subjects of family and relationships, she talks at length about being a businesswoman and her history as an entrepreneur. I found this section fascinating.
Unlike many other business books that focus solely on strategy, she talks a lot about the less graceful aspects of owning a business. About the personal insecurities that can seep into your work, about the anxiety of not always knowing the right path, and about the sometimes unrealistic optimism that you’ll ever make it through tough times. I love hearing about this because it makes me realize that these things are a normal part of being a business owner. Especially in a killer recession.
I also love her central message, which is – in the face of those things – just keep saying yes to your passion. Stay focused on what you believe in, always keep an eye on the bigger picture, and WORK HARD. Every day.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on any of the above if you care to share them! Now its back to work for me. :)
