pistachio ink

I delivered a wedding invitation job yesterday, and the last color was this beautiful pistachio green.  I hope it’s not too boring when I post shots of mixing inks – I just think its so pretty sometimes.

I’m running off soon to pick up some negatives for platemaking, and then come back and start printing.  I delivered these scored table cards the other day along with some menus.  A nice understated and delicate touch.

For the past few weeks I’ve been thinking about how I can use this economic downturn as an opportunity to push out in new directions and become a better business person.   Surely one of the first things I can do is amp up my etsy shop!  I used to be pretty active on etsy, but to be honest after a while I just got kind of bored of printing greeting cards.  So its time take a new approach and get going with some new initiatives.

This morning I took a field trip to Chinatown and hunted around for some vintage paper goods to work with.  I found a treasure trove of good stuff, including a lot of beautiful old accounting stationery.  I plan on doing some experimenting to come up with some interesting letterpress items, all affordable and mostly one-of-a-kind, to post in my etsy shop.  I’ll throw some links to new items as I go, hope you’ll check in with me and give some feedback!

computer furball

In addition to two wedding jobs later this week, I have a lot of computer work to finish over the next few days.  Today I’m working on proofs and ordering materials, next I’ll be making more (yet unpublished) updates to my website.  I’m trying to make the ordering process a little easier for out-of-towners and people who don’t know much about letterpress.  I’ll be adding an “Ordering Process” section and an “FAQ” page.  Any feedback is always appreciated, so let me know if there’s anything you’d like to see more of on the site!

And Gayle is getting bigger and sweeter by the day.  She’s 5 months old now and still napping like a pro…

Do you know that tip about how you should never go grocery shopping on an empty stomach?  The same goes for printing menus…

I really like these neutral tones, so pretty with a simple tree image.  This client ordered matching table cards to direct guests to their seats, very cute!

Today I’m processing plates and cutting paper in between ink colors…

PS:  Someone pointed out that this images are confusing…  Top photos is an exposed polymer plate, bottom is the negative that I use to expose.  :)

Tomorrow and Saturday will be busy printing days, so I chose this sunny day to run some much-needed errands in Manhattan.  (Has anyone here noticed that they’re starting to use the newer voice-automated subway trains on the F Line?  I’m sad, I prefer the old ones.)  The Lower East Side was blooming today…

So I’ve been thinking lately that even though this economy is getting really tough, there could be a silver lining for independent designers/small business owners.  Lately I find I’m very preoccupied with innovation and finding new ways to stay relevant in this marketplace – much more so than back before this financial crisis hit mainstream America.   My usual M.O. here at the studio is to print like crazy and just try to keep with all other aspects of the business and my life whenever I can squeeze it in.

But in light of these new (growing) challenges, I’m going to make an effort to push out a little more and try to connect with people in new and better ways.  I figure if we play our cards right and stay afloat throughout this recession we’ll be so much better at what we do in the end, especially on the business side.   If you have any suggestions or want to share about what YOU’RE doing please leave a comment, I’d love to hear from you!

I delivered this poppy-themed wedding invitation today, printed on Cranes Pearl White.  This orange is so nice against a gloomy day like this one.

And you can now follow my micro moves on Twitter if you’re interested!

I’m finishing printing a wedding job today, but right now Gayle is asleep on my lap so I’m catching on computer work.  Last week my guru Kathleen Connally came to Brooklyn to do some shooting here at the studio.  While she was here I dug out some old plates and reprinted her business cards.  Kathleen’s celebrated photoblog follows the happenings of beautiful Durham Township in Bucks Couty, Pennsylvania.  Check out this collection if you need a moment of zen.
