Archive for September, 2008

I haven’t posted in a little while because I’ve been doing a lot of work on a website update (and didn’t think taking a picture of my computer would be very interesting).

But I’ve also been printing a steady stream of calling cards for Brooklyn Social Cards, which has been such a fun collaboration.  It sounds silly but my favorite part of every job is pinning a sample up on our bulletin board after the order ships out…our collection is growing nicely.  :)

I’m working on a few winter weddings this month, two of which are destination events.  I really like the color of this coral scene, a beautiful blue-green that looks wonderful with a chocolate brown text.

As promised, I wanted to post today about using metallic inks in letterpress.  Many people confuse letterpress with foil-stamping when it comes to shiny graphics and lettering.  It’s an easy mistake since both processes have impression.  But one of the limitations with printing metallic ink in letterpress is that the color loses its sheen when it is pressed into paper.  Above are a few example photos (ie. notice the difference between the gold ink itself, and the gold printed areas).

This topic seems to come up on a regular basis these days, I guess because gold is a popular color right now.  I still love the effect here, but if you are looking for something distinctly “shiny” you should consider going with foil stamping, which uses actual gold foil and not ink.

PS:  This is just my take on the subject.  There are letterpress printers out there who will go for that shiny look, either by double printing the image with a bright yellow ink below, or just use tons of gold ink on their rollers.  Just my opinion, but I don’t really like the result there.  It looks very over-inked, or “muddy” as we LP people say.

I’m so excited to be back with a monthly card, illustrated by the talented Jessi Klein (after a little summer hiatus)!  This drawing is a farewell to beach weather, but I’m already looking forward to some autumn scenes.  Maybe some squirrels raking leaves?  Jessi actually takes requests…so please share any scenes you’d like to see in coming months!  I’ll send a free pack of cards to the best suggestion.

I had the pleasure of working on this sweet baby announcement this week, with a nice lavender ink and a beautiful liner paper to match.  I’m a little behind on posting work so I’ll try to catch up over the next week or two.  In particular I’m planning some posts on metallic inks, polymer plates and (finally) a new monthly card illustrated by Jessi Klein!
