Archive for January, 2009

This week I got to work with talented illustrator and designer Ray Yuen on a bilingual invitation he designed.   I like how the ‘double happiness’ character is raised in the middle of that block of blue color, very cool.  Thanks Ray!  :)

Right after New Year I spent a few days cleaning off my shelves (…which are somehow still messy) and I realized I had some notecards left over from my last sample sale in December.  I listed them in my etsy store, $5 for a pack of eight cards, if you need to stock up.

parachutes

I’m taking a few days off this week to go on a little road trip, but wanted to post these cards I printed this week for Parachutes.org.  Parachutes is Etsy founder Rob Kalin’s new non-profit, aiming to shake up the way people teach and learn. It’s based in Red Hook, Brooklyn, and will be launching publicly in April.  I think Rob did an awesome job designing these cards.

Hooray!  Another episode of our library series is out, hosted by the delightful Grace Bonney of Design*Sponge.  It has been really fun working through this project, and I should be printing my final stage pretty soon.  Grace and the gang from the library are coming by tomorrow morning to shoot, so the final episode will be up in the coming weeks.  After that we’re going to have a shindig at the library to celebrate and showcase the work.  I’ll post details once I have them, and will probably offer the prints for sale in my etsy shop.  Thanks for tuning in!

I left work a little early the other day to take some portfolio pictures at home.  I’m so excited because I moved in December, from Park Slope to nearby Windsor Terrace, and my new place has beeeaaautifullll afternoon sunlight.  I took a bunch of shots for my website, which will be updated soon…I swear.

notecard gifts

I had to share these cute notecards because I think they are such a great gift idea.  One of my clients, who is getting married this weekend, wanted to give her bridesmaids some nice personal gifts.  So she gave me a list of their names and told me a little about each one (one is a chef, one a writer, one a yoga devotee, a dog lover, an artist etc.) and we came up these sweet icons for each.  Hats off to her for a great idea!

Its a nice gloomy day here in brooklyn, I heard rain before I even opened my eyes this morning.  But we’re listening to Zooey Deschanel in the studio, and I just finished printing this nice gray-blue ink.  The new designs are coming along nicely, hopefully this rain will peter out later today.

I’m going to be printing some new invitation designs this week, so I spent the weekend finalizing my color palette.  Most of my “research” involved making cookies and flipping through Martha Stewart magazines on my couch (I have many years worth stacked neatly in my room).  Eons ago when I worked a desk job, I used to dream that everyday would be like this if I owned my own business.  Even though most of my time is actually taken up with printing, design work and admin, I love these times when I remember how lucky I am to be doing what I’m doing.  I’ll have new designs to post in a few days, hope you’ll check back!

Before the holidays I did a save-the-date card for a dear friend getting married in Turks and Caicos this May.  She’ll be going with a flower theme for the invite, so for the save-the-date we did an outline of the islands.  This wasn’t too complicated after I found a good map of the area and got out my trusty tracing paper.  I printed the islands in sage and then the text on top in a dark brown ink.  Now that the holidays are over and winter lies before us, I’m gazing at this destination with a little wanderlust…

masterbedroom

What a wonderful holiday this has been.  I’ve been enjoying a lazy stay at my parents’ home in Pennsylvania, just on the border of Delaware in lovely Andrew Wyeth country.  After such a nice break I am feeling rested and excited about starting the new year.  I have some fun projects coming up in early ’09 and am especially excited about the new line of wedding invitations and save-the-dates that I will be introducing next week.  I’ll be sure to post some photos and links as soon as they’re up.

Thanks to everyone who has been reading this year, I really appreciate the comments and emails.  I wish you the very best in 2009, it will be a good one I think.  ;)
